The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) is to engage government on the intention to reduce corporate taxes in the country.
Mr. Solomon Kotei, ICU General Secretary, said the Union has given government 90 days to settle before contacting the authorities over the objective to reduce taxes from 35 per cent to 25 per cent, which would help Ghanaian workers.
He gave the hint at the 10th Greater Accra Regional Council Quadrennial Delegate’s Conference in Accra last Friday, to review the ICU activities in the region for the past four years.
Mr. Kotei commended government for its determination to reduce corporate tax in the country, and suggested the revamping of ‘distressed’ industries towards job creation before planning to create new ones.
He stressed that, old industries should be supported to create more jobs rather than creating one factory for each district.
He commended the executives of the union for their dedication to duty and ensuring that workers in the country are protected.
“We have worked hard for the integration of the ICU with the Trade Union Congress, and ensuring lower taxes on overtime and on incomes,” Mr. Kotei said.
He announced that the ICU would organise the 10th National Quadrennial conference on the theme: “Our employer’s vision, our concern”, in Kumasi coming August.
Mr. Thomas Atiah, Greater Accra Regional Officer of the ICU, noted that, trade union activities had changed largely due to changes in the working environment.
He said there was the need for clarification of sections of the Labour Act 651, which provide for the termination of employment.
New Greater Accra regional branch executives of the ICU were elected for four-year tenure.
They are Mr. Ephraim Agidi, Regional Chairman; Ms. Diana Bosuh Vice Chairperson; Mr Atiah, Secretary; Mr. Samuel Dzikunu, Trustee; Ms. Belinda Cochrane, Women’s Representative and Mrs. Anita Nyarko-Yirenkyi, Regional Youth Representative.
