A company that operated multiple Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) restaurants and its director have been fined for underpaying its workers
Dove Foods Limited (registered in Toronto), which operates multiple Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) restaurants across Canada and its director Evan Gogou were convicted of failing to pay termination pay and vacation pay after being ordered to do so by a Ministry of Labour employment standards officer.
The company operated multiple KFC restaurants, including in the towns of Stroud, Bradford, Angus and Newmarket, Ontario.
Dove Foods received a fine of $75,000 while Gogou was personally fined $10,000. The court also imposed a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge as required by the Provincial Offences Act.
The decision was handed down on October 31, 2017 by the Ontario Court of Justice.
Fourteen former employees filed the original employment standards claims against Dove Foods for violations of the Employment Standards Act after the company closed several KFC locations. Despite being properly summonsed, Dove Foods and Evan Gogou never attended court.
The decision serves as a stark warning to companies that contravene the ESA or its regulations, or fail to comply with orders under the act.
