One person has been confirmed dead, with two others seriously injured, following a violent clash during a demolition exercise at Akwatia Line, a suburb of Kumasi.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning when a private developer, reportedly claiming ownership of a disputed parcel of land largely occupied by traders, arrived at the scene accompanied by police officers to carry out the demolition of structures.
Eyewitnesses say the traders resisted the exercise, insisting they had received no prior notice or formal eviction order.
The land in question has been the subject of ongoing litigation. A developer identified only as “Bossu” has, for several months, asserted ownership of the property, although the court is yet to deliver a final ruling on the matter.
Tensions escalated when traders confronted the police-backed demolition team, leading to a violent standoff. During the confrontation, an unidentified man was fatally shot, while two others sustained severe injuries.
Ibrahim Alhassan, a leader among the traders, confirmed the incident and condemned the manner in which the exercise was carried out.
At least four spent bullet casings were reportedly found at the scene. Traders have accused both the police and the private developer of being responsible for the sporadic gunfire.
The demolition has left several traders displaced, with goods worth thousands of cedis destroyed.
Meanwhile, the Manhyia District Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three individuals in connection with the incident.
