A three member committee has being setup to investigate the October 2018 KNUST riot which led to the closure of the institution.
The committee chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge, Rose Constance Owusu is tasked among other things to investigate the outbreak of violence on the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology on October 22, 2018 and make such investigations as it may be found necessary to assist the University to avert such instances in the future.
Speaking during the inauguration of the committee in Kumasi, the Asantehene and Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Otumfuo Osei urged the committee to also consider matters concerning the administration of the University which will be relevant to the investigation and make recommendations to help avert future occurrences.
Other members of the committee are Very Rev. Mrs Ama Afo Blay, former Director General of the Ghana Education Service, and Mr David Adu Osei, Ashanti Regional Director of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), with Mr Kofi Owusu, Registrar of Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs as secretary.
On Monday, October 22, 2018, the students, led by the SRC, marched against what they described as unfair treatment by the University authorities and unwarranted assault on their colleagues by some security officers who were supposed to be protecting them.
Following a peaceful demonstration which turned violent, resulting in the destruction of school property, the university was finally shut down to restore calm. It was recently reopened on November 16, 2018.
