The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has agreed to restore power to the Yilo and Lower Manya Krobo municipalities of the Eastern Region.

The agreement is said to have been brokered by the National Security at a meeting, attended by officials of the ECG, Paramount Chiefs, and other key stakeholders.

The areas have been plunged into the darkness since Wednesday, July 27, because Electricity Company Ghana switched off feeders supplying power to communities in the two Municipalities over illegal connections, disagreement over bills, and demonstrations against the installation of pre-paid meters.

But the process to restore power is likely to take some time as sources close to the negotiations say the ECG has identified as many as 12 of its transformers which have been destroyed by known persons.

A roadmap toward the restoration of power is expected to begin tomorrow, Friday 12th August 2022 with the deployment of new transformers to replace damaged ones.

The company will also spend some time assessing the integrity of power lines in the area before possibly lighting the two Municipalities by the weekend.

Per the agreement, the ECG is expected to issue a statement later today, detailing the roadmap toward providing electricity to the two municipalities after two weeks of darkness, which severely affected institutions, particularly health facilities.
